Salzburg Castles

Adventure Castle Hohenwerfen

The Hohenwerfen Castle towers as a strategic fortress on a 155 meter high salient rock in the Salzach Valley approx. 40 kilometers south of Salzburg City. Majestically surrounded by the powerful  high mountain ranges of the Tennen and Hagengebirge. The castle location is a "sister castle" to the Hohen Salzburg Castle which likewise goes back to the 11th century.  In 1938 the castle was handed over to the district of Salzburg and until 1987 was used by the Austrian army as a training center.  It has been converted and renovated many times over the centuries.

For many centuries the Hohenwerfen served as a prison. Rulers such as Archbishop Adalbert III. (1198), Count Albert von Friesach (1253), the Styrian Governor Siegmund (1525) and Archbishop Wolf Dietrich von Raitenau (1611) were imprisoned here.

Today the castle presents itself as the real "experience castle" with numerous events such as concerts, theater, traditional customs evenings and castle parties.
A special attraction is the historical national falcon yard with flight demonstrations from the different birds of prey, taking place daily.

Hohen Salzburg Castle

Established in 1077 from Prince Bishop Gebhard the I. from Helffenstein in the course of the fight between the Holy Roman German Emperor Heinrich IV. and the Pope Gregor.
Archbishop Gebhard was forced into exile and the castle was only then completed by his successors. Today it is considered to be one Europe's largest fortifications with more than 14,000 m². The fortress is in federal possession, however it has been administered from the state of Salzburg since 1953. The fortress consists of the Romanesque built Palas, the living area, which is still the core of the ancient residence of the Prince Archbishop of Salzburg. Numerous auxiliary buildings and a castle-owned church can not be missing from any fortification. The Hohen Salzburg Castle was converted at the end of the 19th century. Since 1893 the fortress can be reached in the most convenient way with the castle rail. Nowadays the ascent only takes less than one minute. Numerous events take place over the entire year in the fortress and in the romantic castle courtyard and bastions.

Mauterndorf Castle

Lungau is the most southern district in the state of Salzburg and has a special attractiveness to it's visitors. This unusual natural landscape fascinated the Archbishops of Salzburg, the Mauterndorf castle was occasionally used as their summer residence.

In the Roman times a central north-south trade route led across the Hohen Tauern onto the present day town of Mauterndorf. In the 13th century the Archbishop of Salzburg constructed the castle of Mauterndorf at the ancient toll station to protect the market municipality. The church representative Burkhard von Weißpriach and the Archbishop Leonhard von Keutschach extended the fortress in the 15th century. The castle of Mauterndorf was an administrative center of the diocesan chapter until 1806, when it was handed over to State property. At the beginning of the 19th century the castle was slowly falling into pieces, it was bought in 1894 by Dr. Hermann von Eppenstein, a wealthy military surgeon from Berlin, who slowly started to renovate the building with considerable expenditure.

Sigmund Thun Gorge

In the Kapruner Valley "Blustery and forceful floods pound against us.
Quote: Graf Sigmund von Thun, a.d.1895

During the last glaciations, approximately 14,000 years ago, the Kapruner Valley was covered by a powerful glacier. Slowly flowing downstream, it worked away the hard lime mica slate rock of the Mais and Bürgerkogels.

The melted glacier left behind a cut valley, where the Kapruner Ache now flows towards the valley.

Up to 32 meters in depth the Kapruner Ache cuts 320 meters in length through the Sigmund-Thun Valley, cutting and forming   smooth whirlpools and scours in a refined way. This process still continues today and documents the recent development of the Kapruner Valley.
