Location & History of Bad Fusch

One moves from "Fusch on the bath route" up to the  Weichselbach Valley in an easy hour. Then one comes into the onetime famous valley where now only the ruins of the high mountain spa , Bad Fusch (1,188 meters), remain. The "bath in Fusch" was well known by the Pinzgau natives as early as 1500.  The first people looking for healing were probably farmer's from the very swampy Oberpinzgau, which suffered frequently at that time from "intermittent fever".

In the year 1417, the health spa is to have had a twin towered church, which was not because of the significance of the health spa, but probably because of the silver mining on the Kühkarkopf in Weichselbach.

In old times "bath Fusch" was known as the "farmer's bath." Acquired at the end of the eighteen hundreds it had even more meaning. It is identified as having its period of prosperity at the second half of the nineteen hundreds.

A large promoter and sponsor was the Salzburg Prince Archbishop, Friedrich Schwarzenberg, after which the largest spring "Fürsten Spring" is named. He regularly visited the health spa from 1829 to 1843 and owned a house here. He was also known as an enthusiastic mountain climber and climbed many of the surrounding summits with the mountain guide, Johann Holzer, better known under the name as Bad-Hans. The Hohe Tenn was climbed by him for the first time. The Archbishop had health spa shelter-huts and walking paths put into place in the area around the health spa. The Fürsten path which is now decayed led from Bad Fusch to Ferleiten. The avalanche disasters which afflicted the health spa again and again were fateful. In the seventeen hundreds an avalanche destroyed the Mitterkar church and many other buildings. That is why the place of worship was build again in 1705 in a safe place. It was consecrated Holy Wolfgang. That explains why Wolfgang cult cities are frequently found in the proximity of curative springs. Pilgrimages also were led here.

Despite the heavy strokes of fate the health spa begun to have even more domestic and foreign visitors. 500 bathing guests came at the end of the nineteen hundreds. The painters of the Romantic Period soon discovered Fusch as an attractive motive. That is why there are a row of copper passes and paintings of the Fusch baths from the nineteen hundreds. Some worth mentioning are Georg Pezold, Friedrich Loos, Heinrich Reinhold, Jakob Alt. Also the famous poet Hugo von Hofmannsthal visited Bad Fusch in recent years. The town experienced an upswing when the "bathing street" was built in 1893. More modernization took place when improvements were made to the two hotels, the area around the swimming pond, the bowling alleys and a tennis court. From Bruck to Fusch a wagon service was built and in a seasonal post-office was opened. Of the eleven springs existing today, the Fürsten Spring is the most productive, the Augen Spring and the Leberbründl are wonderful to observe. They contain only a few mineral components such as sodium sulfate, magnesium carbonate, silic acid among other things. They are however rich in natural carbonic acid and have a constant temperature of approx. 6.2 degrees Celsius. The water has a regenerating and revitalizing effect. It energizes the appetite, promotes digestion and blood circulation. The springs had positive effects on woman suffering from problems. Patients, who had complaints due to attenuations of the nervous system or for a cure to physical difficulties came here to find relief. Drinking cures, baths and high altitude belonged to the therapy of the physicians. However, soon after the First World War an unstoppable fall began, the unfavorable traffic conditions and the conquerors were being felt. The owners often changed. Fires went through the health resort. After the Second World War they tried to bring the health resort back to life. Unfortunately, a generously planned project did not take place because of financial mistakes. Today the former health spa, because of its seclusion from the world and it's lovely landscape, is a popular place to visit.  Owners, municipalities and tourism organizations are striving together and taking small steps to revitalize this place.
